Having had a background in IT, Alan changed his love of sailing into a new career. As a sailing instructor for over 25 years he has seen many students fulfil their dreams of learning to sail and take command of a yacht. He is a content creator for Ardent as well as hosting Masterclass live sessions.

- RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Instructor
- VHF/SRC Instructor / Assessor
- MCA GMDSS GOC Instructor / Examiner
- RYA Diesel Instructor
- Certificate in Education (Cert.Ed)
Additional Experience:
- 4 Atlantic Crossings
- Sailed around & stopped on Cape Horn
- Sailed around Greenland / Iceland
- Cruised a 12' dinghy 450 miles in New Zealand
- Skippered a citizen science sailing boat in Scotland, researching Cetaceans
Instructor background:
As one of the more senior members of the team, I guess I bring many years of experience!
Hobbies & Interests:
Cruising in my 37' yacht 'Fair Exchange'. Sea Kayaking (when the weather is nice!) and off-road motorbiking. I also like to paint in watercolour and acrylics when I have the time. Reading is a real pleasure, and I find I have plenty of time for this when I'm cruising.
Previous Trips:
Dinghy Sailing in New Zealand
I spent 3 months cruising the east coast of the North Island in a 'Sunburst', 12' training dinghy. Camping on the beaches as we went. It was a real adventure!
Sailing in Patagonia and the Falklands
I was invited to teach both RYA Yachtmaster Offshore and RYA Yachtmaster Ocean aboard the high latitude adventure yacht 'Pelagic Australis'. Both locations were pretty remote and exciting to visit.
Greenland and Iceland
I joined an ex-Clipper yacht to do some RYA Yachtmaster Ocean training. Flying into southern Greenland was amazing, as well as exploring the coast surrounded by icebergs. We then crossed to Iceland. Both amazing countries to explore by yacht.
